What is Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is "a developmental disorder that manifests during the first three years of life. The disorder is characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and nonverbal communication and by restricted, repetitive, or stereotyped behavior." (Johnson) As mentioned in The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), it is characterized by "persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts" (CDC), such as repetitive behavior or nonverbal actions. the symptom of ASD is usually present during early childhood, but may not be fully known until certain skills are developed.
